The small boys shot arrows to develop important skills which they needed when they grew up. They hunted buffalo and used it’s hide and bones for shelter, clothes and tools and the meat for food. Other food they hunted were raccoons and squirrels but they mostly ate buffalo.

The Iroquois Indians by Chanry
The Iroquois thought that evil spirits were the reasons why they were sick.. They thought that the only way to stop the evil spirits from causing the illness is to wear these certain kind of masks to scare them away. If the masks were carved or made in the morning it was supposed to be colored red. If it was made in the afternoon, it was colored black. The Iroquois also made fine pots. The lines in the design were formed in the soft clay before the pots were fired . They also made pretty baskets. They made paint out of berries. They painted the art with stamped designs. The Iroquois can make the stamps out of many things, such as raw potatoes or wood or also rocks.

The Hopi by Billy
The Hopi live in Nevada still to this day. They used boomerangs to hunt animals such as rabbits. Sometimes when they hunt the rabbits it’ll be difficult. If they were lucky they would get two rabbits. One way to capture the rabbits is by trapping them in nets. They hunted rabbits, lizard, and plenty of other animals. They would drink from the cactus if they couldn’t find anything to drink. Since it did not rain much in the desert they drank the water in the cactus plant. Cactus plant water was not very good but it helped stop dehidration for the tribe.

Cherokee by Blanca
Cherokee Indians lived in small communities. Their homes were wooden frames covered with wooden vines and saplings plastered with mud. Each village had a council house for ceremonies. Cherokee society was a matriarchy. Children took the clan of the mother. Kinship was traced through the mother’s family. Marriage was only allowed different clans and between members. Cherokee people adopted the tools and weapons introduced by Europe. When the white population expanded, conflicts arose.

The Sioux tribe used buffalo for many things like shelter, clothes, and tools. They had transportation so that they could move around. Some food they hunted were raccoons and squirrel but the main thing they ate were buffalo. During the winter, the kids used scraps of buffalo bones and pieces of wood to make shields. The Sioux were famous for bravery, fighting ability, and political skills.
Some of the Sioux live now in Minnesota . Today half of the Sioux live on reservations in the northern plains. The others live in the urban areas throughout the United States. by Brissa

Coyote
In the Navajo myth, people said that a great, mischievous god named Coyote created the Milky Way. Coyote was very impatient when the Holy People decided to place the stars in the sky. When the world was created the Holy People gathered around the Black God to place the star in the sky. The Coyote was very annoyed and at the slowness of process and chose to place a red star, which represented himself. The red star was called Maiio. This star appears shortly every once a year and is said to be a sign of trouble. Coyote was a trickster and would often use this to get what he wanted.

The Maya by Elizabeth
The Maya were located in a lot of places .Explorers and scientists have found remains of Maya cities in areas that are today the countries of Mexico,El Salvador, Honduras,Guatemala, and Belize.
Some of the Maya become farmers because of their skill to plant food, and the Maya who lived along seacoasts became skilled fishermen.
The Maya believed that the Gods had destroyed and recreated the earth several times, and they also believed that it would happen again. I think that is why they try to please the Gods. That is why they always thought that the Gods were angry when when such natural events such as droughts happened. The Maya also believed that there were gods like the sun and the moon. They believed that the sun was their father and the moon was the sun’s wife and was their mother. They believed that the moon watched over the woman and gave them good fortune when their children were born, and it also helped them with their weaving.
They also believed in a corn God.The corn God helped them with the corn.It helps them grow the corn to eat. There is also a God of death. The god of death was very powerful and fierce. The rain God controled storms and rain. Therefore, the Maya have a lot of different beliefs than us.

Flint Boys
The Navajo Indians called the Pleiades, Flint Boys. According to their myth, Black God had a cluster of stars in his ankle after the sky separated from the earth. The people asked what the meaning was.
Every time Black God stamps his foot, the Flint Boys would jump on his knee, hip, shoulder, then his forehead where they stayed. It also reveals that Black God was in charge of the sky.

Navaho The Navajo Indians adopted the custom of the whites. The Navajo Indians sometimes raided the settlements of Americans, Mexicans, and other Indians. In 1863, Kit Carson, marched with 400 men around the Navajo stronghold. The troops killed much of the livestock and burnt the crops. The Navajo were captured and taken captive to Fort Summer. The Navajo have Faith with the colony. The Navajo had their own jobs like men would hunt, and shelter. The Navajo women would clean the house they would take care after the family. All are used to being like that. They are used to it because they learned since they were small. I guess they have a very interesting family. We should probably try to be like them.

The Hopi Indians by Richmond
They lived in the real dry deserts of the southwestern United States. They ate corn, pumpkins, and melons. The men were the ones who plant and harvest crops. The corn was the most important food. They made jewelrys that were silver. They put animals on their silver. The men weave ropes, kilts, sashes, and leggings. The men were probably too important that if there were no more men, the tribe would’ve been taken over.

Navajo Indians by Shelley
The Navajo Indians are very famous among the world. The Navajo Indians are very famous for their string art. The Navajo Indians are extremely talented when beading with string. The Navajo Indians are located in the following states: Arizona, Utah, New Mexico, and Nevada. The Navajo Indians live in houses called hogans. The word “hogan” means “home” which describes what a hogan is. Hogans are not always built as an exact shape. They can vary depending on the materials which the tribe has to build a hogan. When a child is born, the Navajo would chant a song:...
I have made a baby board or you...
my son (or daughter)...
May you grow a great old age...
Of sun’s rays I have made the back...
Of black clouds I have made the blanket...
Of rainbow I have made the bow...
Of sunbeams I have made the side loops...
Of sun dogs I have made the covering...
Of black fog I have made the bed.
The Navajo Indians also love to weave rugs. They would spend many weeks weaving a medium rug. Weaving takes a lot of effort to make look beautiful. The Navajo will always be remembered as a tribe that loves artwork

Powhatan Indians by Sian, Edward, Marla, & Oscar
Powhatan Indians are special. Ever wonder how they lived? Well if you have not this can be pretty interesting!
By the time the European settlers arrived Chesapeake Bay, it was already occupied by about 13,000 to 14,000 Powhatan Indians. The Powhatan Indians concentrated on rivers because the rivers provided food and transportation.
The ruler of all the Powhatan was “Wahunsonacock”. Powhatan was described as a tall, well proportioned man.
The Powhatan nation included thirty tribes. each tribe with it’s own chief which paid tribute to Powhatan.
Powhatan Indians lived in houses that were called long houses. Most long houses were approximately 50-60 feet long. These houses were made by hand with wood that the women collected. They used Redwood trees as the walls and smaller trees as the shorter sides.
The Powhatan Indians have a cycle called “The Cycle of Life”. The cycle of life is three main things in life. The first one is birth. Birth is when a child is born and there will be a big celebration or festival. When a child is born the baby should be dipped in water no matter how cold it is. The mother should now place the baby in a cradelboard. The baby is now tied down a flat board and safely secured with thongs so its mother can be able to carry her child on her back. The child should remain on a cradle board until it is old enough to crawl.
Naming a male child was really important for the Powhatan because they belived that a name reflected on a man’s ability as a hunter and a warrior. As the boy grows up his mother gives him a nickname. If the boy succeeds in any event his father gives him another name. If the child became a great warrior the chief of the tribe will give him another name. That equals to four names.
The second part of the Cycle of Life is “marriage”. Marrige involves (to the Powhatan) that a single man can have more than one wife if he can afford it. If a man had copper or beads it represented how many wives he had. A man thought if he had more than one wife he would be taken care by his sons when he grew old.
Death, is a scary word to some of us but the Powhatan didnt think so. The Powhatan belived that spirits had a land of their own. That place had a temple. They took good care of the leaders in the temple. The bodies of other people were buried in individual graves.

Mayans
The Mayans were an ancient civilization that built many pyramids and temples. Some were used to honor gods and goddess. The Mayans had jewelry and pottery like no other people. The Mayans buried jewelry in the gods’ or goddess’ temples. The masks that the Mayans used were mainly for festivals and ceremonies. Making pottery and jewelry are just a few skills the Mayans had.

Sioux by Jackie
In 1909, about 10,000 out of the 25,000 Sioux within the United States were officially reported as Christians. The proportion is probably now at least one-half of Catholic, the others were mostly Episcopalians and Presbyterian.
Sioux is of the largest and most important Indian Tribes north of Mexico. The single exception of the interest and responsibility of the Sioux, being widely scattered on both sides of the international boundary. While the Sioux are virtually within the United States, and based on the recent period, they kept up close connection among the various bands.
