Greetings Campers - My name is Marcy Montgomery and I am the Education Development Coordinator at Camp Internet and welcome you to the program. We are pleased to have three new states joining the program through special scholarships this year. Your Ancient Southwest studies will link you to fellow classrooms and expert resources in Colorado, Arizona, California, and New Mexico this year - a good chance to learn about this entire Pacific Southwest regional heritage and share that learning with other students in dozens of schools. The Southwest track is one of our newest projects, just started last year, and we will be adding many new resources to the library to enrich your learning activities this year. Welcome Campers !
Marcy Montgomery, Ed Devel Dir, Camp Internet: . . . . Wed, Aug 29, 1:31PM PST (-0800 GMT)
WHEN YOU ARRIVE - scroll down and post a HELLO at the bottom of this chat room. Let us know your name, school name, number and types of students. If you type your name and school name in the YOUR HANDLE box below the message box, it will automtically identify you as the sender every post. To get back up top to read through these activites and exercises, you can always type a large number in the SCROLL BACK box, then click chat, and it will take you back up above .
********************** FRONT PORTAL TOUR ***************************: . . . . Wed, Aug 29, 1:32PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Lets begin our online training with some simple orientation exercises. The front portal of Camp Internet button is divided into three main areas.
Camp guidelines: . . . . Wed, Aug 29, 1:33PM PST (-0800 GMT)

Camp guidelines: . . . . Wed, Aug 29, 1:34PM PST (-0800 GMT)
When on the main portal of Camp, look on the left ... this left column with STATIC resource links. This is where resources are stored that are available year round teachers resources, student resources, archives of activities, the media library and more.
Camp guidelines: . . . . Wed, Aug 29, 1:35PM PST (-0800 GMT)
On the right is the column, on the yellow paper, that features the INTERACTIVE dynamically changing activity and showcase links.
Camp guidelines: . . . . Wed, Aug 29, 1:37PM PST (-0800 GMT)
It is here your students will come for INTERNET DIGS (see example at this button about Wooly Mammoths)
discussions with scientists and historians in TRAIL GUIDE CHATS button links you to a chat with a Mesa Verde Ranger or this button links you to a chat about Chumash Rock Art)
.. and to post their bi-annual field reports. We will help you understand the unique learning activities that take place inside each of these areas as we go along in the training.
Camp guidelines: . . . . Wed, Aug 29, 1:38PM PST (-0800 GMT)
At the bottom of the main Camp portal are the access points to the different Camp Internet subject tracks. Your Ancient Southwest track has access to all of these anytime, and as we proceed through the year, there will be several sessions held in common with the other tracks.
Camp guidelines: . . . . Wed, Aug 29, 1:38PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Ancient Southwest tracks trail head uses this banner as the entry point
Camp guidelines: . . . . Wed, Aug 29, 1:39PM PST (-0800 GMT)
The main track shared by all Campers is the GIS CENTER for math and science projects.
Camp guidelines: . . . . Wed, Aug 29, 1:39PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Many teachers are also implementing facets of GLOBAL GARDEN in their classroom.
Camp guidelines: . . . . Wed, Aug 29, 1:39PM PST (-0800 GMT)
As Camp is in the last year of our pilot phase, we are continuing to construct and redesign these tracks to make them more user friendly, so expect to see changes behind these trailheads, but the trailheads themselves will remain constant entry points........... . In fact, your track is undergoing a complete front end re-design that we will showcase soon. Right now it is a broad library of resources and will soon have a full navigation interface.
********************* POWERPOINT OPTION ***********************: . . . . Wed, Aug 29, 1:46PM PST (-0800 GMT)
If you have POWERPOINT on your computer, you can download our training demo from this (it will take awhile to open as it is image intensive be sure to then copy it to your own hard drive or zip disk so it doesnt have to refresh itself long distance - it will also ask you to re-log in to ensure you have permission to download this) button and then follow its guidance to view different areas of Camp Internets many resources. Even with the Powerpoint intro, this chat room intro should also be reviewed
. For those of you who do not have access to POWERPOINT, we will later send this CD ROM out on CD with a free Powerpoint viewer that you will load onto your own computer.
********************** THREE BUILDING BLOCKS ********************: . . . . Wed, Aug 29, 1:50PM PST (-0800 GMT)
One of the most important concepts we present to our teachers, to help them succeed in presenting a distance learning program in the classroom, is to clarify what Camp is Not and what it IS. Camp Internet features three building blocks that both teachers and then students learn to access and master: INFORMATION, KNOWLEDGE, SHARING
.. Camp is NOT like a book where you can only read someone elses ideas, not like a television show that keeps you passive as an observer, not like a CD ROM that has no human interaction, and not a random use of the Internet for casual surfing
. Camp is VERY FOCUSED on specific learning objectives for every Camper, and also content-specific learning accomplishments inside each subject track. This is a new way of learning, and it takes place in a DISTANCE ELARNING COMMUNITY of teachers, students and parents all pioneering this exciting and empowering new way to learn online. And it is a new way of learning possible only over the Internet on this amazing global communication network. ....................To help define this further, here is a link to a visual document you can print out button . This document reminds us that the STUDENTS three building blocks are :
: . . . . Wed, Aug 29, 1:50PM PST (-0800 GMT)
1. Learning to access INFORMATION online
: . . . . Wed, Aug 29, 1:51PM PST (-0800 GMT)
2. Learning to turn that information into KNOWLEDGE
..
: . . . . Wed, Aug 29, 1:51PM PST (-0800 GMT)
3. Gaining the skills to SHARE that information online with others.
************************* HANDS-ON is FUN !!! ***********************: . . . . Wed, Aug 29, 1:52PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Another important concept is that while Camp uses Internet technology to share information and encourage knowledge building, the real strength of the program is in the use of this knowledge to undertake hands-on and field learning projects.
We understand technology as a means to reach exciting learning destinations and experiences, not as an end in itself. Your Camp Backpack kit that will arrive soon contains a weather kit, a grow box, a real dinosaur bone artifact. These are all examples of hands-on learning activities that will compliment the online learning activities art projects are also strongly encouraged!
: . . . . Wed, Aug 29, 1:52PM PST (-0800 GMT)
We also support online reporting projects using data gathered in field explorations.
In the past, students have gone to Yosemite, Catalina Island, Indian Canyons in Palm Springs, Dinosaur Journey in Colorado, Hawaiian Volcanoes Park, Anacapa Island, and Joshua Trees National Park.
: . . . . Wed, Aug 29, 1:53PM PST (-0800 GMT)
We hope this year our SW classes will post field reports from locations in your areas
.. in COLORADO (any dinosaur hunters?)
ARIZONA (any Hohokum canal explorers? Or Petrified Forest visitors? or Walnut Canyon, or Canyon de Chelly, or Grand Canyon explorers?)
. and NEW MEXICO (Petroglyph National Monument ? Frijoles Canyon explorers? Pueblo visitors?)
************* SCREEN SET-UP for MORE ACTIVITIES *********: . . . . Wed, Aug 29, 1:53PM PST (-0800 GMT)
To make better use of this chat environment, we suggest opening a second screen and sizing that one so it is visible at the same time this one is....... To do this, click on FILE in browser's upper left corner, pull to NEW, and then over to WINDOW......... Work with each window to size it so both can be seen at once ( middle button on upper right - window overlapping a window - minimizes the full screen, then at the each window's lower right corner you can shrink/enlarge further)......... Once you have two windows visible, use this one that is the chat for reference, and use the other window to see the real screens live ( go to Camp portal, then open Teacher's Web)....... Now we are ready to proceed.
************* NAVIGATING the TEACHERS WEB *********: . . . . Wed, Aug 29, 1:55PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Once you have both windows open, we can provide a guided tour, step by step, here in the chat room, and you can use the features live in the other window .......... First place to open and view is the TEACHERS WEB and you should see this left side bar that is a static navigation tool that will be there all year long ......
************* NAVIGATING the TEACHERS WEB *********: . . . . Wed, Aug 29, 1:55PM PST (-0800 GMT)

: . . . . Wed, Aug 29, 1:56PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Now try out the different links these lead to so you start to get familiar with how to use the TEACHERS WEB ....... Most commonly used areas are ROSTER - this is where you find one another for any inter-classroom activities ........ CHAT ROOM - this is where we are now and will be used regularly all year round after school and in the evenings for ongoing professional development and friendly conversations among colleagues ........ CALENDAR is a place you should go every MONDAY to make sure you know what is coming up each week - and in future weeks - open your TRACK's CALENDAR to see how these work ........... TOOL KIT offers you software for different projects and we will help you understand how to implement those when needed .........
****************** STUDENT PASSPORTS ***************: . . . . Wed, Aug 29, 2:05PM PST (-0800 GMT)
TEACHING MATERIALS is a repository and gateway to valuable resources you will use in the classroom and to prepare for teaching technology in the classroom. Your PASSPORT masters are in this area but do not open until you need to print them out as they will close you out of the current browser. The PASSPORTS are sets of QUESTIONS for students to focus on as online research motivation each section when finished can earn the student a color sticker (passport stamp) that we will include in your kit. Teachers print out the passports from the provided hard copy or online versions, and Camp provides the color stickers.
: . . . . Wed, Aug 29, 2:06PM PST (-0800 GMT)
: . . . . Wed, Aug 29, 2:06PM PST (-0800 GMT)
PASSPORTS are a very popular feature for students and travel with them through out the year to a home or library computer, to show family etc. They are a great source of pride and accomplishment and are often used s the benchmark to prove they are ready to go on their yearend live field trip for classrooms that decide to do live field work. This year we are providing brand new COLOR FOLIOS designed to look like a backpack for each student. You will get a sample in the mail soon and then the remainder for the class will come with your full kit. Folio picture is above.
****************** LESSON PLAN WORKSHEET **************: . . . . Wed, Aug 29, 2:12PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Also in the TEACHING MATERIALS SECTION are the LESSON PLAN DATABASES. It is very important that you return to this section at the end of the training and open the SOUTHWEST LESSON PLAN form and complete the INTENDED subject selections. This document will be updated, by yourself, through out the year. TO START before you begin presenting Camp in the classroom, please click on the subject matter you would like to cover do not worry about the dates per se just focus on the CONTENT you would like to share with your students
This will help us calculate the areas of strongest interest and develop more activities in those areas. AND it will help you realize the scope of the content and begin planning our lesson plans you will use as the core foundation for presenting Camp resources in the classroom.
.To reach this database, first go to TEACHING MATERIALS button then scroll down the main body of the page and click on SOUTHWEST LESSON PLAN button
****************** CAMP EMAIL for TEACHERS *********************: . . . . Wed, Aug 29, 2:20PM PST (-0800 GMT)

: . . . . Wed, Aug 29, 2:21PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Lets look at one other new feature available for Camp Teachers. We now offer a web-based email center for your use from any computer, anywhere (similar to hot mail). This is accessed from the BOTTOM of the left side bar in the TEACHERS WEB see above. In your other live window, open this link up
. LOGIN using your teacher ID and password
once you are in your private email account, COMPOSE a message to your class account. To do this, type in the class ID (from your welcome sheet) as classid@campinternet.net - jonesjr@campinternet.net for example. Then send your class account a message. Soon we will go over and check to see if the mail was received in the STUDENT CENTER email service.
: . . . . Wed, Aug 29, 2:25PM PST (-0800 GMT)
While you are still in your own private email account, we also need you to register for the two LISTSERVS that will send you Camp BRIEFINGS each week. To do this COMPOSE a message to camp01-teachers-request@campinternet.net, and write SUBSCRIBE in the subject line. Then SEND. Next, COMPOSE another message to camp01-sw-request@campinternet.net and write SUBCRIBE in its subject line and send. Check back soon to this account to make sure you get the CONFIRMATION letter asking you to confirm this is indeed you asking for the subscription just respond per its directions. IF IT DOES NOT ARRIVE, re do the exercise watching CLOSELY to make sure you use a ZERO ONE after camp, all is lower case, and teachers is plural.
: . . . . Wed, Aug 29, 2:27PM PST (-0800 GMT)
IMPORTANT - - - Now that you have learned how to subscribe to a listserv, please do the same from your HOME or SCHOOL accounts as best meets your needs for access to Camp information. Remember, everything that goes out will also archive in your Camp web email, so if you miss a message from home or work, it will be there for you at the Camp email center.
************************ Let's Visit the STUDENT CENTER *************************: . . . . Wed, Aug 29, 5:30PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Back to the main Camp Portal, in the left side bar you will find the STUDENT CENTER ........... click to enter and we'll explore a few features.
: . . . . Wed, Aug 29, 5:30PM PST (-0800 GMT)

Student Email Guidelines: . . . . Wed, Aug 29, 5:34PM PST (-0800 GMT)
First, click on STUDENT EMAIL and log in with your class account to see if what you sent to your class account has arrived. If it has not, you may need to resend from the TEACHER'S EMAIL center to make sure it was address correctly......... Once you are in the class account, please delete any unwanted mail that may be in there from previous postings.......... You will want to get your students to sign an acceptable use agreement when you issue them this ID and password, and must make it a requirement that they not share the account with friends - it is for class use only - or - to show their parents at home. Any student who does not follow this guideline will be responsible for risking the loss of the account for everyone else in the classroom - so let's help them take this responsibility seriously.
Student Center Guidelines: . . . . Wed, Aug 29, 5:38PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Also in the STUDENT CENTER are the personalized BACKPACK with tools for students, their own portal to the Camp CALENDAR for their track so they can plan ahead for live participation, a VIDEO LIBRARY, and a STUDENT GALLERY of work we invite their participation through contests and special assignments. There is also a link to their current BREIFING and news about TRIAL GUIDES
. When students access Camp they will always use their CLASS LOGIN and this area will open to pages that then personalize the page recognizing them by their class or school name. FUN !
************ Visit the TRAIL GUIDE WEB ***************************: . . . . Wed, Aug 29, 5:42PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Also in the left static link section is the TRAIL GUIDE WEB button that introduces students to some of the great experts we bring online for them to learn from. We ask students to always be aware WHO they will be chatting with, WHAT the guests specialization is, and to prepare up to 12 questions per class that are ON TOPIC. This is a good place to start to get to know who they will be learning from online.
************ Check out the CHAT ARCHIVE **************************: . . . . Wed, Aug 29, 5:47PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Speaking of TRAIL GUIDES, the CHAT ARCHIVE button is where you can go to read questions and answers from previous Trail Guide Chats and to use INTERNET DIGs anytime ( the links stay active even after archiving, and can be used for manual answer recording, although live posting only happens when the session is access from the right dynamic TODAY at CAMP INTERNET link). If you can not attend a chat - send in your questions ahead of time and watch for answers to post in the archive later.
******** Lets move over to the RIGHT SIDE TODAY at CAMP INTERNET ***********: . . . . Wed, Aug 29, 5:52PM PST (-0800 GMT)

*********** Come DIG the INTERNET ! **************: . . . . Wed, Aug 29, 5:53PM PST (-0800 GMT)
This side of the screen, on the yellow paper, is where the exciting LIVE and INTERACTIVE features take place, and special events or contests are showcased. During this training session we have a live INTERENT DIG button for you to try out to get familiar with this highly popular learning environment. This DIG is opened for your use as a training module 8am-9m through September 9th please answer at least 3 questions and be sure to type your name and school in the YOUR HANDLE box.

Can you please remind me how to post answers on the Intenet dig? I don't see any box on the dig to type in answers. thanks.
Marcy, Camp Internet: . . . . Thu, Sep 6, 7:41PM PST (-0800 GMT)
C Paulson - the Internet Dig is open on the main portal 7am - 9 pm - look for STUDENT DIG. The room with no box is the TRAIL GUIDE CHAT and is there as a demo (it too has a message box when active).
Marcy, Camp Internet: . . . . Thu, Sep 6, 7:45PM PST (-0800 GMT)
C Paulson - just checked it out and have paged the sys admin to reopen the box that is somehow not currently active. Sorry for the surprise on this ... we extended the hours today and this must have somehow effected the message box access.

Gaby Jackson from Madison School in Indio CA: . . . . Thu, Sep 6, 8:51PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hello everyone. My class and I are happily beginning
our study of the Channel Islands. We've read the
first 5 chapters of The Island of the Blue Dolphins. I
prefer to read the book before showing the video. I'm
anticipating good support from the parents and I'm preparing
a presentation for next Tuesday's Back-to-School Night.
........I'm interested in this GIS/GPS afternoon, is that our
Desert Sands in La Quinta?
Janet - Madison: . . . . Thu, Sep 6, 9:03PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Marcy,
Please clarify the lesson plan - do you want to resubmit the form if we filled out during the training? I don't remember getting a copy of our form.
Thanks
Wendy Morrison: . . . . Thu, Sep 6, 9:32PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hello everyone, I am off track this month, so my students are not getting envolved yet, but I love checking things out so far. We have planned a trip to Donner Park Muesum for Backcountry:) That should be very educational.
Marcy, Camp Internet: . . . . Fri, Sep 7, 7:33AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Janet - the Lesson Plan form needs to be kept current with INTENDED content checked, and then it is updated monthly once activities are completed. We are looking at adding in the new FIELD REPORT activities and once they are in the form, then you would need to go back and mark INTENDED on those to keep it current.
Marcy, Camp Internet: . . . . Fri, Sep 7, 7:34AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hello Wendy - we do have a little Donner information online to compliment your trip - what time of year will you be going ?
Marcy, Camp Internet: . . . . Fri, Sep 7, 7:36AM PST (-0800 GMT)
Gaby - do you need an activity online for the Tuesday Back-to-School night ? The Karana Dig will be active until 9pm if you need it.
Brian Bartlett --Ridgeview Elementary School--Yucaipa: . . . . Fri, Sep 7, 2:36PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hello Marcy, Timothy, and Camp staff. I just wanted to say hi and tell you that things are getting off to a great start. I am really excited about the GIS and GPS stuff this year, and have already introduced it to about half of my 4th graders, who are now able to find their position, create waypoints, follow routes, and label points. We will try some serious data collection in a week or so. I am lucky enough to have a couple of GPS/GIS contacts. A parent from my class runs a business in which they create GIS maps for our city water district, school districts, new housing tracts, and golf courses. This parent has offered to come in and teach a series of mapping and GIS/GPS lessons. He has also offered to help create GIS maps of our school using his AutoCad program. Something very similiar to the ArcView thing. My class has already been through the USGS site, and seens the digital backyard pictures, as well as having gone through their mapping activities.
Brian Bartlett --Ridgeview Elementary School--Yucaipa: . . . . Fri, Sep 7, 2:40PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Fellow Camp teachers. I, by no means claim to be an expert of many things, but I think I know a suficient amount about how to use Camp Internet in the classroom. I have a ton of activites that I have used in my 4th grade classroom with Camp Internet. If you want any ideas, just let me know. My email in: bartlett@rain.org Even if you don't want any ideas, I may just send them to the listserve anyway! I look forward to the year, and meeting others in the chat room for the digs.

Greetings fellow teachers and headquarters!
I teach 4th grade in Lake Arrowhead and have 32 students this year. Last night was our Back to School night for parents and I was able to explain Camp Internet and get signatures on Internet Use Agreements. There are a couple of excellent parent letters and informational sheets in the notebook we received at training and my parents were pleased to have them. The response was very positive and I look forward to starting next week with the morning briefing with students. Happy camping to all!

Stephanie Schroeder at Solana Vista School in Solana Beach, San Diego: . . . . Sat, Sep 8, 10:06PM PST (-0800 GMT)
Hello to the Camp Internet teachers and staff!
I just started out my first week of school and am ready to introduce Camp Internet to my second graders and their parents. I would like to share the parent letters and informational sheets, but they don't seem to be in my notebook. Is is possible to get these ASAP?...Monday or Tuesday. They can be FAXed to my school at (858) 792-1768 Attn: Stephanie Schroeder. That would be a big help since I have Back to School Night on Wednesday. My focus will be on the Global Garden. Since I have the younger students I will be receiving more parent support. I know this is a new facet of the Camp Internet program, but I wanted to get an idea of what kinds of digs my students would be engaged in? Also, if I am having a parent work with small groups on the computer, I will need guidance on what to train them on.

Hi everyone. I missed the Thursday live chat due to Open House at my school. I am still in the process of setting up the media center and computer lab, so haven't had a chance to get Camp Internet going. I hope to start on that this week, so won't be able to start the introduction just yet. Is there anyone out there who has done this as an after-school activity, that would be willing to share their experiences with me? It's looking like that is the route I will be taking for this year, at least.

Karen - we have several other afterschool projects this year that we would like to create key pals for between your schools .. will work on that in the next few weeks and will be mailing your kit out this week too.

I have lost the sheet with my classes log-in and password.
HELP...I went into the Computer Lab and had to just search the internet with my students...and couldn't get into the student page.
